Earlier this Fall, DDOT and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments hosted a biannual Street Smart event at the intersection of Florida Avenue and 12th Street NE. The kickoff event highlighted the importance of safety for all users of the roadway. Several crash survivors − as well as friends and relatives of pedestrians and bicyclists who were killed by automobiles − recounted how their lives were shattered by a fatal encounter with a car. The common theme among the testimonies was that the crash could have been avoided through safer driving practices and an increased focus on traffic safety. “It was devastating,” said Antonio Brown, the brother of Kenard Hawkins, who was killed crossing the street in Oxon Hill, Md.
